Would You Rather: YWW Community Edition

Hello, my beautiful writers!

It’s time to have some fun and make some tough decisions about our writing lives. Grab your snacks (we don’t judge what you eat) and let’s dive into some “Would You Rather” questions. We all share one thing: the eternal struggle of being a writer. 😂

---

1. Would you rather...

a. Write a love scene in your WIP and have your family “accidentally” find your draft, or

b. Write a shady Twitter thread that goes viral, only to find out your parents are following you?

Why?

Love scenes are universally awkward when family members find them. But the Twitter drama? Your followers will roast you faster than you can say "I wish I was in my book world."

---

2. Would you rather...

a. Write an entire novel that gets rejected because it’s “too local” (and you’re like, “But this is my culture!”), or

b. Write a book that no one in your family understands because you used too much slang from your country?

Why?

Some of you might feel like your book is too Nigerian, too South African, too British, but the truth is we all write from where we’re from. But try explaining “boerewors” or “jollof rice” to someone who’s never had it... yeah, good luck with that. 😂

---

3. Would you rather...

a. Have your story go viral but get a 2-star rating from someone who doesn’t understand your culture, or

b. Have your story get zero reviews because people have other things to do?

Why?

You know the feeling: you pour your heart into your writing, and it does go viral, but someone gives you a rating of “2 stars” because they didn’t get the local references. The struggle is real. But being ignored is another level of sad. 😭

---

4. Would you rather...

a. Have your book turned into a Nollywood movie, with dramatic plots and actors that look nothing like your characters (but it's Nollywood, so who cares?), or

b. Have your book adapted into a stage play at school, with you as the main character (but you’re not ready for that spotlight)?

Why?

We’ve all seen those Nollywood adaptations where the story is pure drama (and we love it). But the school play? Well, the main character is always you, and no matter how hard you try to stay behind the scenes, your classmates won’t let you forget it. 😅

---

5. Would you rather...

a. Write the best opening chapter and never finish it, or

b. Write an entire book, but the ending is so tragic that even your readers need therapy afterward?

Why?

Everyone loves a good beginning—but we all know the pain of a “writer’s block” halfway through. And let’s be real, we all secretly love tragic endings, though they leave us crying in our beds.

---

6. Would you rather...

a. Have your friends read your work and immediately start quoting your characters in the most random situations, or

b. Have your book become so popular that it’s adapted for a stage play at your school’s cultural day (with you as the main character, of course)?

Why?

Your friends quoting your characters at school, in the supermarket, or randomly at a party? That’s a whole level of awkward! But being the star of your own stage play? Wherever you are, you’ll definitely feel the heat from your classmates. 😬

Your Turn!

Now that we’ve given you some seriously tough choices, let’s hear your answers! Drop them in the comments and let’s see which of us would survive in a global writing world. 💥

  1. 1. A
Because I don't really write romance and it only happened once where the rents found the draft. I can swallow that embarrassment again.

    2. B
I'd hate my culture to be rejected and frankly I don't need my family reading my books so it's ayt.

    3. A
One two star rating is better than the overall book being ignored.

    4. B
    Just... I pick B

    5. B
    I like tragedy so...

    6. Honestly, six was hard to pick but I'll choose A rather than B because a stage play at school? Hell no

  2. 1: I'd rather write a love story which my family would "accidentally" read
Why? Because of the drama, and I've always wanted to know how my family would react if they read any of my story, much less a love themed one!

    2: I'd pick option 'b',
Why? Because, their reaction would be priceless which would in turn come with drama... And of course, I love drama!

    3: I'll pick option a
Why? Because none of my stories have never gotten popular or viral... So of course, I'd love the popularity... Besides, just because one person rated my work out of lack of knowledge doesn't mean the others readers don't appreciate it!

    4:I'd pick option b
Why? I'd like for my story to stay the same why, with my characters and all... And hey? Who says I'm not ready for the spotlight?!😂

    5: Option b!!
I'd prefer to make my readers wowed! Make them not expect at that kind of ending, than rather starting without finish— which I always do😪💔

    6: and finally option a
I'd like my friends to read my works, so much as to actually quote the sayings or stuff from my book! It will be much fun and it will hit me more!

  3. I don't even write cultural stories. I study about the whole world and write in general. To be honest, I don't give two sticks about culture. I met it in this world, and I'm going to leave it when I'm gone. At the end of the day, I'm just another passerby. Culture isn't worth dying for. As for the rest, I'm not sure I'm someone who would do most of them.
    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Ouch! Now I guess people know who I am. Ohohohohohohoho
    It matters not though.

  4. 1: Option b
I'm not a fan of romance and I don't see myself doing well in that category. Even the little romance in my ongoing story, I'm stuck at chapter 21 for two weeks now trying to write a simple date scene😭😭. Anyways, my parents will never be on Twitter even in my dreams so there is nothing to worry about. And the roasting from followers, I bet I will laugh the whole time.

    5: Option b
For one, if the book has a great opening and is never finished, then what's the purpose.
But as someone that doesn't like books where the ending is so predictable and cringy, I wouldn't even do well writing it. And get, even if the readers require therapy after reading my book, it will be unforgettable. It will forever live rent free in their minds.

  5. 1. A, Because I can bear the embarrassment.
    2. B, because I don't want my culture to be shamed.
    3. A, because it's just from someone not my whole readers. Plus being ignored hurts on another level
    4. A, because Nollywood is dramatic.
    5. B, because it's better to have an finished book no matter the heartbreak.
    6. A, Because them quoting my characters would mean they actually learnt from the story, so I would be happy
