AI: An Enemy, Friend, or Frenemy?
AI: An Enemy, Friend, or Frenemy?
Last Saturday, we dived into a hot topic that stirred up a lot of opinions in our community:
"Is it right to use AI in writing, editing, or even to do the work of a writer?"
When this question was raised, I couldn't help but reflect on how books were written in the past. Back then, if you weren’t fluent in English or lacked strong writing skills, writing a book was nearly impossible. Editors played a crucial role in refining an author's work, and they made a fortune doing it.
But now, in this age of advancing technology, those editors might just be saying goodbye—because AI is taking over.
AI-powered tools like Grammarly, Hemingway, and Proofreader AI are revolutionizing editing, making it easier and more accessible for writers. I personally use AI for editing, and it has been a game-changer. It's improved my writing greatly that sometimes I don't need AI to edit. But here’s where things get controversial—some writers are using AI to write entire stories.
And to that, I say: That’s where the line should be drawn.
Like most of our members, I believe that using AI to generate a story is unoriginal. Writing is about creativity, emotion, and the human experience—things AI simply cannot replicate in the same way a human can. If you rely on AI to write a book for you, can you really call yourself a writer?
One member, however, took the discussion to another level by saying he has created his own AI—a truly impressive feat! Now, here’s the real question:
If he uses his own AI to write a story, would that still be considered unoriginal?
On one hand, AI needs to be trained, meaning it relies on existing knowledge to generate content. So, in a way, it’s just an extension of the creator’s intellect. But on the other hand, is it really his story, or just an advanced form of remixing what’s already out there?
This is where I’d love to hear from those of you who weren’t part of the original conversation—what do you think? Let’s get talking in the comments!
A Huge Thank You!
Before I go, I just want to thank you all for your incredible support. The Young Wattpad Writers Instagram page has officially surpassed 400 followers, and we’re on the way to 500!
Let’s keep this momentum going—keep engaging, keep sharing, and most importantly, keep writing!
It was a wonderful night. Everyone who missed out rued it but I’d have to say the boundaries should be set at using AI to edit. Do you call yourself a writer if AI creates your work for you? Isn’t that unoriginal?
